Revolutionizing Manufacturing in Saudi Arabia and UAE with AI-Driven Productivity and Sustainability

Apr 23, 2024 | Artificial intelligence

A recent study titled “The State of Smart Manufacturing” reveals how Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance data-driven productivity and sustainability in manufacturing. This global research underscores the role of AI in empowering the workforce and bolstering operational resilience.

Released by Rockwell Automation, Inc., the leading entity in industrial automation and digital transformation, the findings from the 9th annual survey provide crucial insights into the manufacturing trends, challenges, and future plans globally. Surveying over 1,550 participants from 17 countries, including prominent input from the Saudi and UAE sectors, the study highlights the pivotal role of AI in the manufacturing landscape.

According to the results, three pivotal themes have emerged for businesses in Saudi Arabia and UAE: the ongoing AI revolution in manufacturing, the deployment of technology to empower the workforce, and the challenges associated with adopting new technologies. Ediz Eren, Rockwell Automation’s Regional Vice President for the Middle East, Türkiye, and Africa, emphasized the significant uptake of AI and machine learning in the region, with 87% of companies investing or planning to invest within the next year, notably in generative AI.

The impact of AI in these regions is substantial, with applications spanning quality control, cybersecurity, robotics, and supply chain management. As companies strive to meet the ambitious targets set by their governments, bridging the skills gap presents a key challenge. Approximately 46% of businesses reported a shortage of skilled workers, a significantly higher percentage than in the US. In response, 45% of firms are increasing automation and focusing on organizational change management to enhance technology adoption and promote sustainable growth.

Other notable trends in Saudi Arabia and UAE include a higher emphasis on international expansion and addressing climate change as major growth obstacles compared to global averages. Investments in technology also surpass those in Europe, though they trail slightly behind the US.

The survey also indicates that AI and machine learning are top priorities for investment in the region, with standout applications in quality control, cybersecurity, robotics, and supply chain management, showcasing AI’s pivotal role in driving significant business outcomes.

The challenges of technology adoption, such as the lack of skilled labor and resistance to change, are significant. To combat these issues, companies are increasingly turning to automation, outsourcing, and AI solutions to overcome internal challenges and keep pace with global competitors.

“In Saudi Arabia and UAE, smart manufacturing technologies are rapidly transforming industries,” stated Eren. “With a robust investment in AI and machine learning, the region is well-positioned to enhance efficiency and competitiveness, navigating challenges like the skills gap and technology integration to achieve transformative growth.”
